The City of Orange retains an Old Town District where many of the homes pre-date 1920. This is unusual compared to many cities in the area that opted to demolish their old-style homes in the 1960s replacing them with what was considered a modern structure at the time. This was an excellent choice since the Old Town District has become a popular destination for tourists and locals alike. The town has grown to more than 136,000 according to the 2010 census.

Like many cities in southern California, the location for Orange was influenced by the availability of water. One of the areas founding fathers – Andrew Glassell – selected an area where he could direct water from Santa Ana. Additionally, he chose an area with fertile soil and dubbed the town “Richland.”

assell influenced the city name change to “Orange,” as well. In 1873 with growth reaching the need for a local post office, a request was made but turned down since there already was a “Richland” in Sacramento County. Glassell suggested “Orange.” A local historian explained the choice of “Orange” could have originated through three sources:

  • Used as a marketing name suggesting the area had a sub-tropical agricultural nature;
  • It was decided that a new county would be created from the southern portion of Los Angeles County and named “Orange”;
  • The Glassell family was originally from Orange County, Va., where, incidentally, they owned a plantation named “Richland.”
